tkdnsacountry asked: I am curently looking to buy a new computer. I have already decided to buy a notebook computer because I am a student and it will be more convenient for me to be able to take it to class. It is way past time for me to get a new computer. My current desktop is running Windows 98SE. I’m just not sure how much hard drive I need or how much memory. I am a Computer Aided Design and Drafting student. I also am interested in doing graphic design. People in the past have suggested Mac, but with all of the changes in technology I understand that Mac has become nothing more than an over priced PC. There used to be many better components in a Mac, but now the only major difference is higher priced software. I know I want a notebook pc running Windows Vista. I’m trying to decide about the hard drive size, the amount of memory, the graphics card, the screen size, and the battery life. I am interested in any information anyone can give me about graphics and CAD software, also.

Don asked: I’m a college student, and I want/need to buy a new computer for next fall. I’m looking at the HP 8710p and the Macbook Pro (15″ 2.4GHz, 200GB). I’m going into Purdue Engineering and I know some of the software I will use needs a Windows OS, but the Mac can run both OS X and Vista or XP.
As of now, I’m leaning towards the Mac. It’s lighter, smaller, and has a bigger hard drive. I’m worried because I know that Macs are geared more towards multimedia editing and design and I’ll be doing more calculations and possibly running a CAD program later on down the road in engineering.
any suggestions?
Also, how are Macs immune to viruses?
Thanks everyone!!!
Well, for everyone who wishes to answer this question, I don’t need you to answer that second question about Macs and viruses.
When I called up to Purdue Engineering to ask about which computer they’d suggest, all they told me was every computer they sell (through Purdue’s store) will be work for any student on campus. And both the Mac and the HP come with a kickass warrenty.

Todd C asked: I have my own sketches for jewelry designs including rings and watches as well as sunglasses. I am having the hardest time figuring out who to contact to manufacture my designs. I will buy software for my Mac to do CAD drawings but i’m not sure of the best software for that on a budget either. Does anybody know of any jewelry and watch manufacturers that produce private label designs???

Frostz asked: Hey my brother just bought the new aluminum Macbooks. Now I have a Dell XPS with a whole ton of software because my Dad is a software engineer. Now some of the programs my brother wants like Adobe CS4, Auto Cad, Games like FIFA09, COD5, and features like HDMI hook up and Blu Ray are not available on his Macbook. He paid 1800 for his Macbook while I paid 1300 for my XPS but I actually can do all that. So we are wondering is there is any way to get all this for the Mac without installing Windows on the Macbook (He doesn’t want to use Windows because he says it defeats the reason of buying the Macbook). The way he sees it right now, Macbooks are useless for there price. I’ve been using OSX and I don’t see what makes it any better then Windows.
I just want respond to the answers. First Dell is not the Kia of Computers. The Dell XPS easily rivals if not tops the Macbook Pro. Second you guys far exaggerate virus affecting PC’s and third he decided to Install Windows Vista on his Mac. I checked CS4 on apples website but they don’t have anything for CAD and basically no good Games. On top of that Blu-Ray is great and i still get a good hour and a half when watching Blu-Ray movies on my XPS. Plus i can plug it into my TV because it has HDMI.

jvstiniann asked: I have been a print designer (packaging, advertising etc..) for 10 years. Big companies, nice portfolio but BURNT OUT. I was looking for a serious career change.
CAD seemed like it might be a good direction to go. More technical at least.
Advice? Software? Do I need to get some schooling? (I’m a self-taught designer)
What about the MAC platform?
