Manda asked: I just set up my new iMac (Intel-based), version 10.5.8 (originally; after the customer support woman had me re-install the software, it shows as 10.5.6, but I am currently running software updates). It’s great… except for the fact that I simply cannot use the USB ports. The only devices that work (and by work, I mean are even detected) via USB are the mouse and keyboard which came with the computer; nothing else works, including iPods. I have checked with the About this Mac, and have even run the USB Prober (belonging to the XCode developer tools), all to no avail. I have tried every single port, have reset the PRAM and NVRAM, and have re-installed the initial software. The problem is not with the ports themselves, it seems, because I can plug and play for the mouse/keyboard on any one; it’s not the devices which I am trying either, since those work on my brother’s MacBook Pro, and re-installing the software should have fixed any possible bugs there. I am out of ideas. I have done everything that customer support has suggested; the next step is taking it into an Apple Store to be looked at. However, I would like to use that as my last resort, since I am living in Spain (though the computer was bought in the US). This is incredibly frustrating, since it’s brand spankin’ new. The only time it has ever been opened was at the Apple Store (in the US) to transfer data from my old PC to this iMac, to set it up a little. Please help!
To answer your questions:
1) I re-installed the OS upon the request of the customer service rep. from Apple. This was I guess to fix any bugs in the software that were interfering with USB functions.
2) I have tried, other than several iPods, to plug in an external HD (Neso, by Hitachi- requires no prior software installation, is plug and play), as well as a GPS. All these devices work when connected to other computers.
3) The iPod was not even detected by the computer at all, much less by iTunes.
4) Same cords, and I have tried several different cords.
5) I used the DVD that came with the Mac.
6) I did “Preserve Users” since there is a lot of data already stored within the accounts (recommended by the Apple service rep.), but have tried on two admin. accounts; again, no solution.
Hope this info. helps.
I plugged in my sister’s touch and iPhoto opened up with pictures from one of her apps (a drawing, whiteboard type). iTunes recognizes that her iPod is attached, as does it show up in the System Profiler now, but the iPod does not appear on the desktop. This is an improvement, but still puzzling.
