How can I get a free firewall program for my pc?

firewall mac
Mishele S asked:

I’m using our mac right now. We also have a pc that is hooked up to the cable modem and router.

We haven’t been able to get an internet connection on the pc since reconnecting it after renovating our house.

My husband contacted our ISP. He was told that it isn’t the pc, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to connect via the mac. We were told that the firewall program we have expired, as far as the free trial period is concerned.

Our money is near depleted after the renovation (trust me, it was very necessary for us to keep living here). So, we cannot afford to buy a new one.

Is there a firewall program that I can download from the mac and burn it to a disc and then install it on the pc?
*we got connected again, yay!! We’re going to try Comodo, since it had the most recommendation…Thanks guys!!!

Tiny personal firewall is a good one. Also, it leaves a very small footprint so it won’t use a lot of system resources.

you can get free firewall programs here, all these are completely free
    ?&filter=licenseName=”Free”|&filterName=licenseName=Free|&tag=ltcol;narrow

    you can compare firewalls here

personally i would recommend the outpost or comodo firewalls

That’s a bunch of bull. An expired firewall should not cutoff your connection to the internet; it would just periodically tell you to purchase a license renewal.

Try uninstalling your current PC security, leaving behind the default Windows firewall.

If you want free security , look into:

    Avira (free addition)
    Malwarebytes (free addition)
    Comondo (Basic free addition)

The computers should only be connected to the router. It is the router that should have a direct connection to the modem.

    Hello Mishele,

What you are describing sounds a bit strange, because a trial expiration of a security component should never result in a loss of functionality. More specifically, a firewall trial expiring should result in one of these two options (depending on what is applicable to your case):
    1. Firewall disabled and all traffic allowed;
    2. Firewall disabled and Windows firewall restored (if you answered yes when prompted)
but never in a “block all traffic”.
To check whether your problem is really related to your firewall(s), and since you are behind a router, I would suggest that you made sure that all firewalls are disabled (both third-party and Windows, if applicable) and check if you get your Internet connection back.
If you do, then you get a confirmation that the problem was related to your firewall.
If you don’t, then the problem might not be related to your firewalls and it might be somewhere else (I am not sure I understood that, but maybe your PC is connected to the router using a network cable; if so, you should start by simply checking the cable, as it could be faulty, possibly damaged during the renovation).
Once you found your problem, you have got your connection back and are ready to install a free firewall, you have a few options. I would add Comodo (http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html) to the list of programs to try, as it is very effective and easy to manage. If you decide to try it, make sure to disable the integrated antivirus, which comes with the free version, during the installation. That’s if you have already an antivirus installed, because two anti virus clash and can’t run on the same machine.
    Hope it helps.
